Yes and No.

They govern everything – and especially everything in the Energy Sector. Those who know and study these Laws understands that we can’t make something from nothing.

Whenever you hear of things that seem too good to be true – it’s time to revisit the Basic Idea of these laws. For most people the clear example is that of the famed (and non-existent) Perpetual Motion Machine. Famously this concept has deluded people for most of History and even the Patent Office regularly receives entries that have to be turned down due to this being impossible.

This is because the First Law or Thermodynamics, that which we civilians are most interest in, states that Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can change forms – for example, from Natural Gas to electricity (with byproducts of waste heat, water vapor, etc.) or, in what seems like Magic, from a tiny bit of Uranium to heat which powers an Aircraft Carrier or Power Plant.

For we “regular janes and joes” to understand this, we have to combine it with another, more general, quote:
” any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic”.
In our daily lives this means we can sometimes appear to get something – either for nothing or for a very small outlay. I consider Heat Pump technology one of these cases – where we appear to get more heat from less electric than if we “burned” that Electric by itself. However, these technologies might be efficient once the electric exists, but getting the electric efficiently becomes just one problem. In a sense, your Heat Pump ends up making your heat the same price as burning the Nat Gas directly – no more!
Power Plant > your home (40%) > Heat Pump (200%) is about 80% total efficiency – less than the best Direct Gas Furnances commonly installed today.

Heat Pumps might have some Magic in them, but our Motor Vehicles less so! As is shown in our Efficiency Calculator, an EV or even a Hybrid or ICE Vehicle is about 30% efficient. We can only imagine how all our costs could come down if we could bypass – or even maximize – the conversions which are part and parcel of the First Law of Thermodynamics.

Early in my Energy Career there was a LOT of misinformation being spread – I quickly learned to use common sense (as well as my reading of The Energy Primer and other materials) to sort out the Hype.
Example – One Woodstove maker claimed to me that the shape of their stove made it heat to the far ends of the house WITHOUT GETTING HOT. To this day, 40 years later, I remember my reaction.

“Tell you what. Pull down your (insulated) pants and sit on that stove for 5 minutes after I fire it up – I’ll buy a truckload if you do”. Of course the sales person declined. It is/was impossible for a simple steel box with a 1500 Degree flame inside it not to get hot on the outside.

Another major brand of woodstove actually stated that should freeze some empty Milk plastic bottles full of water and place them in their stove to cool off the room in the summer! Yes, this is true and the company in question was Buck Stove, at the time probably the largest selling models.

Many other models had sales pitches like “one or two split logs in our model will heat your home for 12 hours – ALL NIGHT. It was only later when I started to do the math.

I wish I could say things have changed in terms of what people might believe – and this is largely the reasoning behind this site. Extrodinary claims demand extrodinary proof!
As a consumer of energy and energy producing and using products you might not need to know the Laws of Thermodynamics word for word. However, it’s important to apply common sense to counter marketing and sale claims.
